However, the growers of Punjab and NWFP would not be the beneficiaries of the decision the government took to safeguard their interests.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz early this month directed the authorities to make sure a reasonable compensation to growers for their produce.
The food ministry said the decision was restricted to only two provinces due to their lion share in the production of the Irri-6 variety.
Moreover, the decision is only for Irri-6 whereas Basmati - an exportable rice variety largely grown in Punjab - will not lie under its purview due to what the government claims a stable price.
The price of Irri-6 - a premier rice variety - dropped down to the level of Rs 250 per 40 kg after the overall production figure in last Kharif surged by 13 percent in comparison with 2004-05 season.
Kharif is one of the two agriculture seasons of the year that starts from March and ends at September. Rabbi is the other one.
A food ministry arm - Pakistan Agriculture Supplies and Storage Corporation (Passco) - would undertake the operation of buying rice from growers, Federal Food Minister Sikandar Bosan told a news conference here.
He said the government had also directed the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to spare its godowns in Karachi for rice exporters to store the commodity.
Additionally, the minister added, the Ports and Shipping Ministry had also been asked to enhance the number of berths from one to four for the export of rice.
Bosan said after the signing of separate Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for agricultural products' export with China and Malaysia the whole commodity the government was intended to buy would be exported.
He said China had announced a 500 million dollars package for the import of agri products from Pakistan on a 'negligible' 1 percent duty under the MoU.
Bosan said a committee under the chairmanship of State Agriculture Minister Muhammad Ali has been set up to overlook the process of buying the commodity from growers.
The minister hoped that the decision would raise the confidence of growers on the government and thus helped improve agri-based economy of the country.
